We are happy that we get a chance to reflect back on 2017 and we have some great memories, a few successes, and also a few failures. How to Avoid Freeze Damage

Although it has been a fairly mild winter thus far, we know that more freezing weather will be here soon. It is important that your pool equipment is prepared to handle the freeze. Most pool equipment in the Denton area has been programmed so that the pumps are switched on by a freeze sensor when the ambient air temperature approaches freezing, but it is still important to make sure. Following is what you need to be looking for: Main pump—The main pump should definitely be operating when the temperature is freezing. Gohlke Family Inducted into UNT Family Business Hall of Fame

DENTON, Texas — The University of North Texas recently inducted Gene and Matt Gohlke into the Family Business Hall of Fame. The School’s Department of Management established the Family Business Hall of Fame to honor and recognize Small Business Entrepreneurs. The University honored Gene Gohlke of Gene Gohlke Building Products and Denton Masonry Supply for his over 60 years in business in Denton. Gene is a graduate of North Texas and built one of the first swimming pools in Denton in 1958 which launched Gohlke Pools. Gene’s son, Matt Gohlke is the President and Owner of Gohlke Pools. What is mastic? Mastic is an expansion joint sealant that is used to seal expansion joints around swimming pools which are subject to movement. The product provides a firm, flexible, water proof seal over the expansion joint that typically surrounds the swimming pool—and is typically between the pool coping and the concrete deck. WOW—how about this awesome weather we are having right now! I cannot remember such great weather in August—very conducive to being outdoors. Pete Delkus of WFAA had some interesting things to report earlier this week: This summer, our rainfall total is 13.03”, which is 6.98” above normal. The long term forecast for the rest of August calls for lower than average temperatures. With that being said, the rains coupled with the high pool water temperatures can make keeping clear, sparkling water more challenging than normal. We are entering a time of extremely dry and hot weather, which is really drying out the soils. This follows some fairly good rainfall totals that we have had this summer. Extremes such as this can cause problems as this area tends to have expansive soil—soil that expands when it gets wet and contracts when it gets dry. This expansion and contraction of the soil causes whatever is in contact with the soil to also experience movement. This movement can damage not only pool decks, but also on house foundations, driveways, sidewalks, and patios. Battling the Mosquitoes

Back in 2012, we were dealing with the West Nile virus being spread by mosquitos. In 2015 & 2016, it was the Zika virus. Regardless of the disease or the year, it is safe to say mosquitos can cause real problems and we all need to do our part to cut down on the mosquito population. Although mosquito season varies from year to year depending on temperature, moisture, and other conditions, mosquito season in the north Texas area typically lasts from March thru October (source: Mosquitoreviews.com). Stagnant water sources (including swimming pools) definitely contribute to this problem. An important feature of the kitchen was a large pizza oven I ordered that from delivery to installation added a lot of complexity to our project.  Bill, our project manager, handled every challenge I threw at him with patience and grace.  There was some minor damage to the oven during shipping and before they installed it Bill spent a week hunting down replacement tile to repair the damage so I’d never know the difference.  The oven looks perfect!  Every member of every crew they had at our house were very skilled professionals but I must give a special thanks to their stonemasons, Jesus and Osvaldo.  The fireplace they created for us is gorgeous.  We couldn’t be happier with our new patio and I can’t recommend Gohlke Pools enough.
