You may already be aware of the benefits of hydrotherapy in culmination with aquatic exercises. Since water helps improve flexibility and massaging jets helps relax muscles, an ideal time to stretch is while soaking in your spa. To help you get started with this part of your wellness journey, we’ve compiled a list of five quick stretches that can be done while in the hot tub. If you are unsure of performing stretches while in the hot tub, they, of course, can be done before or after you soak in the spa.
- Ankle Circles
You can do this stretch while standing or sitting. Rotate your ankle clockwise for 20 seconds and then counterclockwise for 20 seconds. Switch ankles. Repeat as needed. - Hamstring Stretch
While standing or sitting, stretch one leg out, bend at the hips (keeping the spine neutral), and pull your foot towards you. Hold for 30 seconds. Switch legs and repeat. - Upper Back Stretch
While standing or sitting, wrap your arms around your chest and touch your shoulder blades with your fingertips. - Hip Stretch
While seated, pull one leg at a time towards your chest with both hands and hold for 20 seconds. Switch legs. Repeat. - Torso Stretch
Standing with your feet shoulder-length apart, raise arms in a bowed fashion in front of your chest and slowly twist back and forth for 20-30 seconds.
Stretching in your hot tub–and even before or after–can help enhance movement, avoid new injuries, and assist in repairing an existing injury.
