A Mild Winter

In recent winters we heard phrases such as “polar vortex”, “thunder sleet”, and “cobblestone ice”. But not this winter.

According to the Weather Underground website, we had 17 days at or below freezing (at DFW airport). As a reminder, our average number of freezes is 33. Last winter we had 40 freezes and in the winter of 2013-2014 we had 55 freezes.

In addition, the low temperature this winter was only 27 degrees (January 18 & 23). Looking back on the annual records (which began in 1898) on the National Weather Service website, I could not find a low temperature that was anywhere near that high. The closest that I could find was 24 degrees in 1992-1993. Last winter our low was 16 degrees and in the winter of 2013-2014 our low was 15 degrees.

Backed up with that data and with no freezing weather forecast, I believe that it is now safe to say that it was a mild winter in the DFW area.

It is also one of the first times that I can remember when the local school districts did not use any of their allotted “snow days”.

I only have four words—“Get your swimsuit ready!”

Pool Stains

Most every pool owner has experienced pool staining at one time or another. Stains are usually either organic or metallic in nature. Organic stains develop when leaves, pecans, or the like, sit on the pool floor for an extended period of time. Metallic stains typically occur when the pH becomes too low, corroding the heater or other metal piece of pool equipment, causing the metal to be deposited on the pool surface. Freeze Warning This Week — Be Prepared!

We are expecting the first freeze of the season toward the end of this week—and pool owners should be prepared, as it appears that it will be a hard freeze, with temperatures forecast to get as low as 20 degrees. The average first freeze occurring in the DFW area on November 22nd, so it appears that it will happen about two weeks behind schedule this year. Some of the soils in the north Texas region are very expansive, which means they expand when they get wet. Conversely, they contract when they get dry. This back and forth of expansion and contraction can be very difficult on structures such as house foundations, driveways, sidewalks, patios, and of course—swimming pools and decks. Winter After February 2021

We tied for the second coldest temperature on record in DFW with -2 degrees and (if you don’t count the hour that it got above freezing on February 13th) it was also the second-longest consecutive number of hours at or below freezing. With one of the coldest winter snaps on record, we saw very little freeze damage to pools that stayed operating. The extreme temperatures put a significant load on the unprepared Texas power grid. The majority of the freeze damage to pool equipment transpired when power was lost for a significant amount of time. An important feature of the kitchen was a large pizza oven I ordered that from delivery to installation added a lot of complexity to our project.  Bill, our project manager, handled every challenge I threw at him with patience and grace.  There was some minor damage to the oven during shipping and before they installed it Bill spent a week hunting down replacement tile to repair the damage so I’d never know the difference.  The oven looks perfect!  Every member of every crew they had at our house were very skilled professionals but I must give a special thanks to their stonemasons, Jesus and Osvaldo.  The fireplace they created for us is gorgeous.  We couldn’t be happier with our new patio and I can’t recommend Gohlke Pools enough.
