    According to my calculations, today, August 13th, is the eighteenth time this summer that we have reached 100 degrees. With the weather forecast for the next few weeks predicting temperatures of over 100 degrees almost daily, it appears that we will far exceed our average of 20 days per year of temperatures over 100 degrees. It now appears that the number will be in the 30-40 range. This is far below our record of 71 100 degree days in 2011.   • Water Your Yard to Prevent Damage to Your Pool

    We had a fairly mild and wet first six months of 2026, but the last few weeks have been very hot and dry. This type of weather can impact pools in the north Texas area, and we all need to be aware of it. This area tends to have pockets of fairly expansive soil—soil that contracts when is gets dry and expands when it gets wet. Therefore, extremely dry, hot periods can really dry out the soil—causing it to contract. When it finally does rain, expansion of the soil will take place. Whatever is in contact with the soil during this time of contraction and expansion also experiences movement.     Most of us at Gohlke Pools are animal lovers. Whether they are our pets or our clients’ pets, we get attached to them and we want them to have the best life possible, especially during the dog days of summer.     It seems to have been a fairly mild spring/summer thus far, but before long it will be 100 degrees and rainfall will likely become a distant memory. You might recall that last summer was way below average as far as 100-degree days are concerned—we only had 7 days of at least 100 degrees (we average 20).     We had a fairly mild summer, as we only reached 100 degrees five times, which is way below our average of twenty. Now we turn our attention to winter weather. According to the National Weather Service, there is a likelihood of above-normal temperatures and normal precipitation this winter. This outlook is largely influenced by the presence of a developing La Nina climate pattern, which typically results in warmer and drier conditions across the southern tier of the United States.     It has been a rough few days for pool owners. With temperatures getting as low as they did, combined with the number of consecutive hours below freezing, there were some pools that experienced freeze damage.
