    DFW Freezing Weather Information

We really do not know much about what type of winter that we will be experiencing.  The Old Farmer’s 2020 Almanac says the following about what will happen in what they call Region 11, which includes north Texas: Winter will be milder and drier than normal, with below-normal snowfall in places that normally receives snow.  The coldest periods will be in mid-to-late November and early January and from late January into early February.  The best chances for snow are in early December, early to mid-January, and mid-February. With that being said, we will not actually know until it is over.  Following is some weather information to help get you in the right frame of mind: Number of days that the temperature reaches freezing Winter 2018/2019…

  • It Is Going To Be a Great Summer!

The Rain What an interesting (and wet) spring that we have had—it has been a record breaker! In April, we received much more rain than normal, but then the record-breaking May arrived. Now that the rain appears to be over for a while, let’s look back on it. In May, it rained 24 out of 30 days for a total of 16.96” of rain. It was the most rain that we have received in May since records have been kept—117 years (1898). In addition, it was the third wettest month since records have been kept, less than 1” from the wettest month. Thru May, we have received 31.63” of rain, which is 88% of our yearly average of 36.14”. The biggest beneficiary of this rain…

    How to Select a Contractor

There are many very good contractors in the area, but there are others who are not reputable and likely do not have the knowledge and/or financial resources necessary to be a contractor. Unfortunately, the growth in the area is resulting in unqualified contractors entering the market. Currently, there is much more work than there are contractors to do the work. This combined with the fact that the state of Texas has minimal licensing or bonding requirements for building contractors can make it risky to hire a contractor. This oftentimes result in an unhappy customer and even sometimes results in litigation. How can you avoid this potential problem and select the right contractor? Speaking from experience, by doing your research. Several times over the years I…

  • What Pool Owners Should Do After A Rainstorm

Heavy rain can expose problems such as poor drainage and can create problems such as debris in the pool and water chemistry issues. It is important to do the following after a heavy rain: Determine if drainage problems exist which can be corrected. Remove debris from the skimmer baskets. Skim debris off of the surface of the pool. Vacuum the pool as necessary. Check water chemistry and be sure that the pH is in the proper range. Superchlorinate according to label directions. Consider operating the pump and automatic cleaner for an extended period of time to help clean up the pool. Check the water chemistry the day after the storm and adjust as necessary. If problems still exist, call Gohlke Pools at (940) 387-7521 or…

  • I Think That I Might Have Freeze Damage

The recent cold weather provided us both of the extreme weather events that can cause freeze damage—long periods of time with temperatures below freezing and extremely low temperatures (lowest temperature recorded since February 1899). Most pools would have been avoided having any damage even with the extremely low temperatures, but the real outlier from past freezing weather events were the power outages that many experienced—which has resulted in quite a bit of damage to pool equipment and plumbing. As you are probably already aware of, water expands by approximately 9% when it is frozen, therefore anything that is full of water and freezes can potentially be damaged. There will be quite a bit of freeze damage that will become evident as the temperatures warm up…

  • How the Pool Pump Law Changes Affect Your Pool

Remember the 100-watt light bulb? We will be saying the same thing about 2 horsepower pool pumps in the very near future. On average, the pool pump is the second-largest energy consumer in a home behind the HVAC system(s). It is not surprising that pool pumps have been added to the U.S. Department of Energy’s list for minimum energy efficiency standards like refrigerators, washers, and dryers. There is a big change to pool pump production guidelines that begin July 2021. Although, most manufacturers have already moved to adapt to these new guidelines. What are these changes? Single-speed pool pumps above 1 horsepower will no longer be manufactured and sold. Any water demands greater than what a 1 HP pump can provide, will have to been…

Albert did a great job communicating throughout... from swinging by before repair to ensure correct sizing/equipment, through quoting, ordering, scheduling time and completing repair. Top notch, very professional and great experience. Thanks, Albert!

We recently hired Gohlke Pools to remodel our patio and add on an outdoor kitchen. An important feature of the kitchen was a large pizza oven I ordered that from delivery to installation added a lot of complexity to our project. Bill, our project manager, handled every challenge I threw at him with patience and grace. There was some minor damage to the oven during shipping and before they installed it Bill spent a week hunting down replacement tile to repair the damage so I’d never know the difference. The oven looks perfect! Every member of every crew they had at our house were very skilled professionals but I must give a special thanks to their stonemasons, Jesus and Osvaldo. The fireplace they created for us is gorgeous. We couldn’t be happier with our new patio and I can’t recommend Gohlke Pools enough.

Gohlke did a great job building us an outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven and remodeling our large patio including resurfacing the concrete. Always on schedule, all over the worker were a class act. Bill supervising the job was a real pro and great to deal with. Placing a 3000 pound oven was a challenge and they made it look easy. Real attention to detail. This is a great company!

WOW! Just WOW! We couldn’t be happier with our first pool! It’s a huge investment, and you want to feel confident and comfortable with your decision. From the first meet-and-greet to Matt and Connor checking in after completion, we are so thankful we chose Gohlke Pools. Communication gets 100 stars! We received regular email updates throughout the project with timelines and progress reports. Connor was extremely helpful with design ideas and changes, and Matt was always present—taking care of anything and everything promptly. Caden did a fantastic job with our “pool school” at the end. He was patient, answered every question, and genuinely wanted us to feel prepared. The entire process was smooth, and they even finished ahead of schedule. We were also impressed with each subcontractor—the quality of their work and the respect they had for our property were outstanding. Subias, the recommended landscaper, was wonderful to work with, and Javier Subias was incredibly helpful in planning our outdoor design. All in all, we were so impressed with Gohlke that we’ve decided to use them for our weekly service as well. THANK YOU, GOHLKE POOLS, for making our experience so positive!
