I have heard several pool industry experts state that inflation for the pool industry is between 25% and 60%, depending on the region of the country and the segment of the pool industry. We believe that the inflation that we have experienced in the pool industry is the highest that we have seen in our company’s 64-year history.

I am not sure who “most people” are, but from what I have observed, 70-78 degrees is a bit cold for most of us north Texans. Most of us seem to prefer between 80-84 degrees, but it really depends on the individual and what type of swimming is being done.

The hurricane caused a fire at that production facility that was eventually extinguished after a few days, completely devastating that plant. It was predicted that it would take about 2 years to rebuild. With that news, 3” tablet prices sky rocked 30-40% immediately. At that time, it was nearing the end of pool season for most of the country, and most pool owners didn’t have to worry about it.

The demand for swimming pool construction right now far exceeds the supply. As a result, pool construction is taking much longer than it ever has. Pool construction projects that used to take from 8-12 weeks from the first meeting to swimming are now taking at least twice that long. Why is this and what advice do we have?

At that point, we had had only had 8 days at or above freezing. But all of that starting changing on February 9th when it hit freezing and didn’t let up for 12 days, reaching a low of -1 on February 16th, which is one of the few times in the last 125 years that it has been below zero. These low temperatures combined with the power outages definitely created a memorable event, and not in a good way. ☹

The confluences that have caused the delays that the pool industry is currently experiencing is the shortage of skilled craftsmen, followed by the increased demand caused by the pandemic, and finally—the freeze damage in Texas.
- [How to Select a Contractor](https://gohlkepools.com/how-to-select-a-contractor/): There are many very good contractors in the area, but there are others who are not reputable and likely do not have the knowledge and/or financial resources necessary to be a contractor. This combined with the fact that the state of Texas has minimal licensing or bonding requirements for building contractors can make it risky to hire a contractor. This oftentimes result in an unhappy customer and even sometimes results in litigation. How can you avoid this potential problem and select the right contractor? Speaking from experience, by doing your research.

Most pools would have been avoided having any damage even with the extremely low temperatures, but the real outlier from past freezing weather events were the power outages that many experienced—which has resulted in quite a bit of damage to pool equipment and plumbing.

What can really be difficult on pool equipment is consecutive number of hours below freezing—which we are expecting from Friday night until Wednesday (over 100 hours). It has been 25 years (January 30-February 5, 1996) since we have had that many consecutive hours of below freezing, when we had 136 hours.
