  • The Dog Days of Summer

Most of us at Gohlke Pools are animal lovers. Whether they are our pets or our clients’ pets, we get attached to them and we want them to have the best life possible, especially during the dog days of summer. With that being said, with the hot weather that we are currently experiencing, we sometimes get asked our opinion of whether dogs should be allowed in the family pool. Although it is not recommended by most in the swimming pool industry due to additional chemical requirements and dog hair in the skimmer baskets, pump basket, & filter, we have always felt that dogs that enjoy being in the water should be allowed to do so. The exception to that would be vinyl-liner pools, as a dog’s claws could…

  • Time to Order a Mesh Pool Cover for Fall

Do you need a new mesh pool cover or an existing one remade? After placing your order, it can take several weeks before installation is possible. Now is the time to take the first step and have us come out and measure your pool. In the fall and winter seasons, falling tree foliage, wind-blown debris and sudden freezes are a part of life in North Texas. Pool covers are an important consideration for pool owners all over the region. We typically tell customers that if they have a leaf problem in the fall, a cover is probably the best option whether that is a simple leaf mesh net or an Anchor Mesh Safety Pool Cover. One reason these have become increasingly popular is they allow…

  • How to Prevent Pool Damage Due to Expansive Soils

Some of the soils in the north Texas region are very expansive, which means they expand when they get wet.  Conversely, they contract when they get dry.  This back and forth of expansion and contraction can be very difficult on structures such as house foundations, driveways, sidewalks, patios, and of course—swimming pools and decks. Concerning swimming pools Although pool builders use cushion sand and steel rebar in the construction of pool decks, they still require the pool owner’s attention to help prevent raising, settling, and cracking.  In addition, the type of movement that sometimes occurs can also damage the expansion joint (deck-o-seal joint) between the deck and the pool, which needs to be checked periodically. Although it is next to impossible to completely avoid some…

  • The Water is Starting to Warm Up

The air temperature is finally starting to warm up, which means that swimming pools are also warming up.  Each week we check pool water temperatures in the Denton area.  This week the pool water temperature is between 72-76 degrees, which is the warmest that we have seen thus far this year. Since we maintain hundreds of pools, monitoring water temperature is very important, as we know that pool care and attention to water chemistry becomes more important as the water temperatures increase.  In addition, most agree say that temperatures need to be 60 degrees or higher for algae to grow—and we have found that to be true. The bottom line:  The water has warmed up to a point that algae is growing if you neglect…

  • Buying a House with a Swimming Pool

We are now entering the time of year when people move.  On average more than 40 million people move each year in the United States, and it is estimated that 80% of those moves occur between April and September (movinglabor.com).  An inordinate amount of these moves are occurring right here in north Texas.  Many of these moves will be to homes that have existing swimming pools.  I am often asked, “Is purchasing a house with an existing swimming pool a good idea?”  The answer is Yes.  No.  Maybe. First, you should determine if a swimming pool would be a good fit for your situation.  If you do not use the pool or could use the money elsewhere, then purchasing a swimming pool is probably not…
