How to Purchase a Hot Tub

Buying a hot tub is a decision that you should not feel rushed or pressured into. It is important to take your time and ask plenty of questions. As with most major purchasing decisions, knowledge is everything. Following are some questions that you should consider when shopping for the hot tub.

The hot tub

How was the hot tub constructed?
How is the seating configured?
Are you able to move about easily in the hot tub?
What is the warranty on the shell of the hot tub?

The hot tub equipment, jets, & controls

Are the controls user-friendly?
Do the jets & controls allow you customize what jets are operating?
How loud are the jets & the pumps?
What are the electrical requirements to operate the hot tub?
What is the warranty on the equipment & control system—are there exclusions?

The manufacturer

How long has the manufacturer been in business?
What is their reputation?
How are warranties handled?

These are just a few of the purchasing decisions that one must consider. Taking your time to really research the purchase will pay dividends over the long haul, allowing you to create a “vacation in your backyard” that will last for many years. With the lake levels continuing to decline and fires continuing to burn across the state, it is very important that we, as poolowners, are not wasting water by way of a leak. Therefore, now would be a great time to determine if your pool is leaking. Depending on the atmospheric conditions, swimming pools will lose up to ½” of water per 24 hour period through evaporation. Most of the time it will be less than this but it should never be more (assuming there is no splash out or backwashing of the filter). The History of Pools at the White House

I recently attended a pool conference in Washington, DC. While on an afternoon tour, the conversation turned to the history of the White House and if it still had a swimming pool. Planning for the White House began when President George Washington signed into Act in December of 1790 a declaration that the house be built. Construction began in 1792, and it was not until 1800 that the first residents moved into it—the family of President John Adams. Since that time, each President has made his own changes and additions, which includes 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms, 6 levels, 28 fireplaces, and 3 elevators. 100 Degree Weather Facts for the DFW Area

It seems to have been a fairly mild spring/summer thus far, but before long it will be 100 degrees and rainfall will likely become a distant memory. You might recall that last summer was way below average as far as 100-degree days are concerned—we only had 7 days of at least 100 degrees (we average 20). Swimming Pools, Stagnant Water, & Mosquitos

Back in 2012, we were dealing with the West Nile encephalitis epidemic being spread by mosquitos. In 2016, the Zika virus (also spread by mosquitos) was in the news. Recently it was reported (Denton Record Chronicle on June 24, 2019) that a mosquito trap in Frisco tested positive for a West Nile mosquito. Regardless of the disease or the year, it is safe to say mosquitos can cause real problems and we all need to do our part to cut down on the mosquito population. Stagnant water sources (including swimming pools) definitely contribute to this problem. An important feature of the kitchen was a large pizza oven I ordered that from delivery to installation added a lot of complexity to our project.  Bill, our project manager, handled every challenge I threw at him with patience and grace.  There was some minor damage to the oven during shipping and before they installed it Bill spent a week hunting down replacement tile to repair the damage so I’d never know the difference.  The oven looks perfect!  Every member of every crew they had at our house were very skilled professionals but I must give a special thanks to their stonemasons, Jesus and Osvaldo.  The fireplace they created for us is gorgeous.  We couldn’t be happier with our new patio and I can’t recommend Gohlke Pools enough.
