Will Winter Ever Arrive?
It sure seems to have been a mild winter thus far. After our first freeze on November 22nd, it has fell to freezing or below approximately 13 times at DFW airport. We are slightly behind our average of 24.2 freezes thru January. WFAA recently reported that January daily temperatures were above normal 14 times and below normal 17 times, which was a surprise. But remember, winter is not over. Although we are unlikely to hit our average number of freezes (33), rest assured that we will have more freezes. Our average last freeze is March 13th, and our latest last freeze is April 13th (occurred in 1957 & 1997).
What about snow?
As of today (February 1, 2016), we have only received a trace (at best) of snow thus far this winter, but I was surprised to find out that thru January of last year, we had only received a trace of snow. In February of 2015 we received 2.3” of snow and in March of 2015 we received 3.5” of snow. Our average annual snowfall is 1.7”, with breakdowns per month as follows:
December—.3” of snow
January—.3” of snow
February—.9” of snow
March—.2” of snow
Not exactly the snowiest place on earth—that would be the Hakkoda Mountains in Japan, which receives an annual 312” of snow per year—yes, 26’ of snow! With that being said, most of us like at least one or two good snowfalls a year in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and according to our weather history—February gives us the greatest opportunity.
In conclusion, rest assured that there will be more cold weather ahead, so as a pool owner be prepared.
