Flooding Followed by Drought Followed by Flooding
This has been a crazy year thus far weather-wise. We started out with record rainfall in April & May, followed by an extremely dry period of over 40 straight days of no precipitation, which is the third longest dry stretch since records have been kept (1898). We then had the second wettest October ever (we received 9.82” and we average 4.22”), and we picked up most of that rainfall in under 10 … [Read more...] about Flooding Followed by Drought Followed by Flooding
The Rain is Finally Coming!
This has been a very strange weather year. We have had record heat this month, but don’t forget about the record rainfall in April & May. In addition, we have had two very long stretches without any measurable rain—41 days (July 9th thru August 18th) and 32 days (September 20th thru today). But the weather forecasters are telling us that we will have heavy rain over the next few days. I am … [Read more...] about The Rain is Finally Coming!
Still Swimming?
Even though it has been unseasonably warm this week, pool water temperatures continue to fall due to the cooler nights that we have been having. Although quite a few people (especially kids) will swim thru October, for others the water will soon be simply too uncomfortable—as most of us prefer pool water temperatures in the mid-to-high 80s. With the first average freeze date for this area being … [Read more...] about Still Swimming?
The Leaves are Falling Earlier than Usual
This has been a very interesting spring and summer in regards to weather—we had record rainfall in April & May and since that time it has been extremely dry. Typically the leaves don’t begin falling until the cold weather arrives in November, but this recent dry stretch has many trees dropping their leaves. This lack of rain puts trees under more stress, which results in dead brown leaves this … [Read more...] about The Leaves are Falling Earlier than Usual
Winter Pool Care Options
The 100 degree days appear to be over for this year. Soon it will be getting cold, and I recently heard a report by Pete Delkus, meteorologist for WFAA, that this winter will be 3 degrees colder than average with more precipitation. That does not bode too well for swimming pools if preparations aren’t made. Depending on several variables (number of trees surrounding the pool, pool location, … [Read more...] about Winter Pool Care Options
Preventing Pool Damage Due to Dry Weather
This has been a very interesting pool season. We started out with record rainfall in April & May, and now we are in the midst of an extremely dry period. August 18th is the 41st straight day of no precipitation, which is the third longest dry stretch since records have been kept (1898). Extremes such as this can cause problems as this area tends to have expansive soil—soil that expands when … [Read more...] about Preventing Pool Damage Due to Dry Weather
Is Your Pool Water & Pool Area Getting Too Hot?
Although thus far it has been a very mild summer thus far, it is beginning to get hot as it typically does this time of year. Traditionally one of the solutions to dealing with the summer heat is the cool enjoyment that a swimming pool can provide. That is not always possible in August – as pool water tends to heat up, oftentimes past the point of being refreshing. Most swimmers … [Read more...] about Is Your Pool Water & Pool Area Getting Too Hot?
It Is Going To Be a Great Summer!
The Rain What an interesting (and wet) spring that we have had—it has been a record breaker! In April, we received much more rain than normal, but then the record-breaking May arrived. Now that the rain appears to be over for a while, let’s look back on it. In May, it rained 24 out of 30 days for a total of 16.96” of rain. It was the most rain that we have received in May since records have … [Read more...] about It Is Going To Be a Great Summer!
